ATHERTON is a small, unassuming town. But tucked away in the surrounding mountains you'll find some amazing mountain bike trails, Greg Reynen writes.

In fact there are almost 200 km of mapped tracks around Atherton, west of Cairns. There are heaps of virgin routes from old logging roads to fire trails.

I had a great time riding a nice long incline on our way up Mount Baldy.

On the crest, our hard climb was rewarded with a beautiful view of the sun setting on the distant hills.

Coming back down I hit a little creek with a huge splash, so we decided to hit it again.

What a great way to cool off after riding the Tablelands!

Being in its fledgling state, the Tablelands Integrated Mountain Bike Association is modelling itself on the amazing mountain bike links and hubs of Wales, with hopes of biker-friendly bed and breakfasts and detailed routes.

This is the place to come for some leisurely riding or to explore
